MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY TRACK & FIELD HONORS

North Carolina A&T State and Kayla White of North Carolina
A&T State were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference's (MEAC) Men's and Women’s Track Performers of
the Week, the conference announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s
Jeremiah Peters and Norfolk State’s Jacob Milton were named
Co-MEAC Men’s Field Performers of the Week while Florida
A&M’s Taylor Gorum and Bethune-Cookman’s Monae’ Nichols
shared Co-MEAC Women’s Field Performers of the Week honors.
Mitchell (So., Durham, N.C.) is currently the nation’s
fastest 100-meter sprinter as he clocked a 10.00 in the
preliminary round of the 100-meter dash invitational at the
Aggie Invitational last weekend.
White (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had a strong weekend on the track
as she vaulted up the national and MEAC charts in the
100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. She currently ranks
12th nationally after running an 11.21 in the prelims of the
100. White posted a time of 12.92 in the 100-meter hurdles
and now ranks eighth nationally in that category. White also
won both events at the annual Aggie Invitational.
Peters (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) had a busy weekend as he
recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the shot put
(51-8.25) and discus (152-11) at the Miami Hurricane
Collegiate Invitational while also placing third (54-10.75)
at the University of Florida Tom Jones Invitational in the
shot put. Peters also competed in the hammer (127-2) in
Miami and finished fourth.
Milton (So., Stuttgart, Germany) won his third high jump
title of the outdoor season by clearing 6-9.75 at the
Charlotte Invitational and remains only one of two MEAC
student-athletes to clear a height of 6-9 or higher in 2018.
Nichols (Fr., Lakeland, Fla.) moved to the top of the MEAC
in the long jump as she placed third overall at the
University of Florida Tom Jones Invitational with a mark of
20-8. She also posted the fifth-best mark in the MEAC after
a length of 40-2.75 in the triple jump.
Gorum (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) holds the top spot in the MEAC
in the discus as she placed third at the Miami Hurricane
Collegiate Invitational after a throw of 167-8. Gorum is
ranked second in the MEAC in the shot put as she placed
second in Miami with a mark of 47-10.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS (men)
Timothy Brice (Maryland Eastern Shore) placed fourth in the
400-meter dash with a time of 49.13 and participated on the
4x400 relay team which finished third at the Towson
Invitational.
Keith Brown (Norfolk State) competed at the Charlotte
Invitational and placed second in the 100-meter dash with a
personal-best time of 10.54.
Kenneth Chigbue (Howard) placed second in the 200-meter dash
with a time of 21.52 and participated on the 4x100 relay
team which finished fifth at the George Mason Spring
Invitational.
Landrie Hatcher (Howard) placed sixth in the triple jump
with a jump of 43-6 at the George Mason Spring Invitational.
Wesley Kirui (Hampton) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at
the George Mason Spring Invitational with a time of 8:57.72.
His time is the fastest in the MEAC and ranks 34th
nationally.
Kyle Nottage (Maryland Eastern Shore) placed seventh in the
shot put with a throw of 43-5.25 feet and met the MEAC’s
discus qualification mark with a distance of 133-2 at the
Towson Invitational.
Caleb Okwaraji (Bethune-Cookman) placed second in the
400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.55 and placed fifth in
the 110-meter hurdles (14.84) at the Miami Hurricane
Invitational.
Desean White (Morgan State) won a total of three events at
the Towson University Invitational with individual wins in
the 100 (10.52) and 200-meter dashes (21.17). He also
participated on the 4x100-meter relay team which finished
first (41.21).
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS (women)
Annastacia Barham (Morgan State) had four, first-place
finishes at the Towson University Invitational as she won
the 200 (24.07), 400 (54.57) and participated on the winning
4x100 (46.49) and 4x400-meter relay teams (3:43.09).
Martha Bissah (Norfolk State) posted her collegiate-best in
the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.51 and placed fourth in
the 400 with a time of 56.39 at the Charlotte Invitational.
She currently ranks 15th nationally in the 800 after
Friday’s race.
Dominique Cleggett (Howard) placed third (18-10) in the long
jump and sixth (38-4.25) in the triple jump at the George
Mason Spring Invitational.
Bhrandi Crenshaw (North Carolina Central) won the triple
jump at the Aggie Invitational with a personal-best leap of
40-6.75 and posted a season-best mark in the long jump
(18-8.5) to place fifth and finished sixth in the high jump
at 5-1.
Jasmyn Hall (Morgan State) placed second in the shot put
with a toss of 44 feet and placed fourth in the discus with
a throw of 132-4 at the Towson University Invitational.
Kellyann James (Norfolk State) posted the MEAC’s top point
total (4,389) in the heptathlon to place fourth at the
Charlotte Invitational.
Corneisha Mitchell (Hampton) ranks second in the MEAC after
a third-place throw of 156-11 in the discus at the Aggie
Invitational.
Uchechi Onuoha (Howard) had four, top-five finishes at the
George Mason Invitational highlighted by a pair of
second-place performances in the 100 (14.11) and 400-meter
hurdles (1:01.17). She also participated on the 4x100 and
4x400-meter relay teams which placed third and fourth,
respectively.
Jessica Roney (Maryland Eastern Shore) placed fifth in the
400-meter hurdles with a time of 48.32 and participated on
the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams which finished fourth
and fifth, respectively at the Towson Invitational.
Sade McCreath-Tardiel (Bethune-Cookman) placed seventh in
the 100 (11.87) at the Miami Hurricane Invitational and
helped the 4x100-meter relay team place fourth at the
University of Florida Tom Jones Invitational.

NCCU Hosts Spring
Football Game on Saturday

DURHAM, N.C. –The North Carolina Central
University football program, under the
direction of first-year head coach
Granville Eastman, will host its annual
“Maroon vs. Gray” spring game on
Saturday, April 21 at 4 p.m. inside
O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium on the NCCU
campus. Admission and parking is free.
Pre-game activities, featuring food
trucks, tailgating, high school battle
of the bands and much more, begin at 2
p.m.
NCCU's spring game will feature the
offensive and defensive units going
head-to-head from various starting
positions on the field. Standard scoring
will apply for the offense, plus one
point for consecutive first downs, an
explosive run of 12 yards or more, or an
explosive pass of 15 yards or more. The
defense will tally four points for a
turnover, six points for a touchdown,
three points for a sack, and one point
for a three-and-out, a tackle for loss,
a blocked kick, or when the offense
starts at the defensive 25-yard line or
deeper and does not score a touchdown.
Defense is allowed a maximum of six
points on any one play.
NCCU kicks off the 2018 season on
Sunday, Sept. 2 against Prairie View A&M
University in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at
Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta.

Holloway has tallied 23 goals and 25 assists on
the year.

a 6-8 record and 2-3 in league action after falling in four

Fayetteville, NC – Madison Mendoza hit a long ball over the
Lamon Street Park left centerfield fence for a three-run RBI
as Fayetteville State defeated Southern Division foeJohnson
C. Smith 10-3 in the first game of a CIAA doubleheader.
The Broncos improved to 7-4 in conference play and 4-1 in
the division to maintain its second-place ranking. FSU is
9-21 overall. Johnson C. Smith drops to 5-8 in the CIAA and
2-5 in the division.
The homer was the only hit for Medoza with her four at-bats.
Fayetteville State seized eight RBI with seven hits. Johnson
C. Smith had nine hits, but the Bronco defense limited the
Golden Bulls to three runs.
JCSU captured a two-run lead after two innings with doubles
by Tatyana Mars and Tia Mahoney.
FSU tied the game in the bottom of the second when Rachel
Rodriguez belted a double into the right centerfield that
allowed Courtney Pierre and Ashlyn Zook to score. The
Broncos took a one-run lead when Maggie Smith singled down
the right line and brought Rodriguez home.
The Broncos tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning
when Pierre crossed home plate on a fielder’s choice and
Rodriguez on a wild pitch. FSU had a 7-2 lead after five
innings when HaLee Knowles scored on a passed ball throw to
first and a Mendoza run on a ground-out.
Johnson C. Smith scored its third run in the top of the
sixth with a Randasia Daniels single RBI.
The Mendoza homerun set the final to 10-3.

Final Stats
Fayetteville, NC – In the second game of the CIAA
doubleheader between Johnson C. Smith and Fayetteville State
at the Lamon Street Park, the Broncos scored on a JCSU
fielding error to capture a 3-2 victory and a share of the
Southern Division lead with Saint Augustine’s.
Fayetteville State improves to 5-1 in the division and 8-4
in the CIAA. JCSU falls to 2-6 and 5-9.
FSU committed three fielding errors of its own to start the
second of the twin bill. The third mishap of the inning
allowed two runs to cross the plate and a single by Tia
Greene put the Golden Bulls ahead by three before the
Broncos could get its first at-bat.
The Broncos put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the
first when HaLee Knowles hit a double into center field for
an RBI.
Maggie Smith singled through the shortstop for an RBI that
had the Broncos trailing by one (3-2).
For her second hit of the game, Knowles nailed a single to
right field to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning.
Madison Mendoza stepped to the plate and reached first on an
error by the second baseman. Shi-Cara Goins, who singled
earlier, scored the winning run.
Fayetteville State finished with a total of ten (10) hits
but had challenges with five (5) errors. Three Broncos led
the way with two hits each; Smith, Knowles, and Rachel
Rodriguez. Knowles also had two RBI.
Ashlyn Zook won her sixth game of the season facing 33
batters with three strikeouts but giving up six hits and two
walks.
The Broncos will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the
third-ranked Shaw University. The Bears is currently 4-2 in

non-conference doubleheader against UNC Pembroke this week.
Beth Walker and Lindsey Stigler have been crushing the ball
this season leading the team with nine home runs each.
Stigler and Walker lead the team with a .411 and .395
batting average respectively.
Shannon Buchanan is 11-6 in the circle this year, while
Shelby Griffis is 10-7. Buchanan leads the pitching staff
with 77 strikeouts.

Lincoln (Pa.) is 2-14 on the season and winless in the CIAA
at 0-12.
Bowie State is 12-15 on the season and 7-9 in CIAA action.

Softball Hosts Lions and Bulldogs In CIAA Finale
Bulldogs Softball Demolishes Washington Adventist 12-4 and 16-5
in Non-Conference Play

TAKOMA PARK, Md. – On a very cold Spring evening, the Bowie State
Bulldog bats were hot, demolishing the Washington Adventist Lady
Shock 12-4 and 16-5 in a non-conference doubleheader.
Bowie State (12-15) beat up on Washington Adventist pitching for 25
hits, which included 11 doubles, two doubles and one home run with
junior Morgan Powell (Upper Marlboro, Md.) leading the attack with
five hits over two games. Seniors Ja’seph Smith and Jacqueline
Pickering, both of Bowie, Md. along with junior Jaelyn Belt (Glen
Burnie, Md.) tallied four hits each. Senior Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison,
Ohio) went the distance in the circle in both games, striking out
19, eight in the nightcap and pulled her season record to 9-9.
Game one started extremely slow for both teams before the Bulldogs
plated two in the top of the 3rd inning. Bowie State led 3-0 heading
into the bottom of the 4th inning before Washington Adventist scored
their first run in the share of the frame.
With the Bulldogs leading 4-2, the Lady Shock tied the game at 4-all
in the bottom of the 5th inning to give the home team new life.
However, Bowie State exploded for eight runs on five hits in the top
of the 6th inning to close out the opening game 12-4.
Bowie State put three on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st inning
of game two only to have Washington Adventist (11-6) match that
output with a trio of runs of their own in the bottom half of the
opening inning.
The Bulldogs added a run in the 2nd inning and another run in the
3rd inning for a 5-3 advantage. The Lady Shock narrowed the deficit
to 5-4 but Bowie State doubled up Washington Adventist in the top of
the 4th inning to extend the visitors lead 8-4. It only got worse
for the Lady Shock as the Bulldogs scored four runs each in innings
five and six.
Bowie State should have finished the game in the 5th inning by way
of the mercy rule, but the Washington Adventist Lady Shock plated
one run in the bottom of the fifth to send the contest into the
decisive 6th inning. The Bulldogs pounded out a dozen hits in the
nightcap.
The Bulldogs make their final long regular season road trip this
weekend, traveling to Murfreesboro, N.C. to face the division
leading Chowan Hawks on Sunday (April 22nd) in a doubleheader
beginning at 1 p.m. |

2018 Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Championship with a
5-0 sweep over the eighth-seeded Converse on Friday morning.

No.2 doubles match 8-2 while, Angelique Gouin and Lenka
Styblova grabbed the No.3 doubles match 8-2 for the Blue and
White.
In Singles: •The Hawks took a strong 3-0 lead heading into
singles play.
•Angelique Gouin won the No. 6 singles match with a clean
6-0, 6-0.
•Lenka Styblova secured the match win with a 6-0, 6-1
victory at the No.5 singles.

Women’s Tennis Season Ends with 5-0 Loss to #1 Shaw in CIAA

BOWIE, Md. - With little trouble, the No. 1 seeded Shaw
University women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of
the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)
Championships with a convincing 5-0 win over No. 8 seed Bowie State
(3-13) on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Bowie State
University.
With the loss, Bowie State’s season ends with an overall record of
3-11 while Shaw improves to 19-2 overall on the season. The Lady
Bears wasted no time with a 3-0 lead after doubles competition,
earning wins all by the scores of 8-0. Shaw pushed forward, sealing
the victory with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, giving Shaw the
5-0 victory.
Sophomore Kionza Allen (Laurel, Md.) dropped her #2 singles match to
Shaw’s Carmen Mantecon 6-0, 6-0 while freshman Oladia Menchaca
(Landover, Md.) lost 6-0, 6-0 to Helena Fekete at No. 6.

Rams Advance to Semifinals of 2018 CIAA Women’s Tennis
Championship Tournament with 5-0 Win Over Virginia Union

BOWIE, MD – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-8) advanced to the
semifinal round of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament in
dominating fashion when the team took a 5-0 win over the Virginia
Union Panthers (10-8), Thursday. The Rams took the win behind a
great performance in the match.
The duo of freshman Avion Harris and sophomore Cylah Gaither got
things started with an 8-0 win at #2 doubles while the team took 8-2
wins at #1 and #3 doubles to go ahead 3-0 heading into singles play.
WSSU’s junior China Brown took a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles before
senior Aja Grant closed the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles.
With the win, the Rams improve to 10-8 and advance to the semifinal
round of the tournament. The Rams will take on the top-seeded Shaw

Chowan Women's Tennis Sweeps Major Awards

SUMTER, S.C.-In the first year competing in the Conference
Carolinas, the Chowan Women's Tennis team finished their
2018 regular season to claim the Conference Carolinas
Regular Season title going an unbeaten 11-0.
Chowan notched six members on the Conference Carolinas
All-Conference team including Player of the Year, Freshman
of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
Head Women's Tennis Coach Stambaugh was named Conference
Carolinas Coach of the Year. Coach Stambaugh led the Hawks
to Chowan's first-ever Conference Carolinas Regular Season
title going unbeaten in league play at 11-0. Stambaugh
posted a 17-3 overall mark and went 8-0 in home matches this
season. This is the third Coach of the Year honors for
Stambaugh on the women's side picking up two in the CIAA.
Senior, Polina
Novachuk brought home the Conference
Carolinas Player of the Year and earned Conference Carolinas
First-Team honors. The Krasnoyarsk, Russia native posted a
19-4 overall record this season including a 10-1 mark in
Conference Carolinas play at the No. 1 singles position.
Polina was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week
five times this year as she helped lead the team to a
perfect 11-0 mark in league play and a 17-3 overall record.
Novachuk was the 2017 CIAA Player of the Year last season.
Minsk, Belarus native Hanna Tarlouskaya was named Conference
Carolinas Freshman of the Year and earned Conference
Carolians First -Team honors. Tarlouskaya was a strong
competitor for the Hawks at the No. 3 position posting a
17-5 record this season. Hannah posted an 8-2 mark in
singles play while going unbeaten in doubles action (11-0)
this season.
Also
named to the All-Conference First Team are teammates Cynthia
Carrier and Victoria
Smolchenkova. Carrier posted a 14-5 record at No.2
singles position while Smolchenkova concluded the regular
season with a 14-7 singles record.
Lenka Styblova and Angelique Gouin rounded out the list for
the Hawks with Third Team All-Conference Selections.

Hawks Men's Tennis Tabs Three To All-Conference

SUMTER, S.C.-In the first year competing in the Conference
Carolinas, the Chowan Men's Tennis team finished their
regular season seeded third heading into the Conference
Carolinas Tournament starting on Friday.
Chowan earned three members on the Conference Carolinas
All-Conference team.
Ghassan Alansi, the Sana'a, Yemen native tallied the
programs first-ever Conference Carolinas All-Conference
First Team Selection as a freshman. Alansi posted a 12-4
record at the No.1 singles position for the Hawks.
Adi Kaliakperov notched Conference Carolinas Second Team
honors after posting a 11-4 regular season record at the
No.2 singles.

Track preps for Captains Invite
Two day event runs Friday and Saturday in Newport News

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — Maryland Eastern Shore’s outdoor track
squad heads to Newport News, Virginia for the 2018 Captains Classic
& Combined Events. Friday’s (Apr. 20) events start at 4 p.m. with
Saturday’s (Apr. 21) events beginning at 11 a.m. at Pomoco Stadium.

will be available during the weekend.
Originally the Hawks were scheduled to participate in two meets, but
the decision was made to attend Christopher Newport’s meet as a
team.
Multi and field events will take place Friday, with running events
on Saturday morning. Pomoco Stadium is located on Moore’s Lane on
the Captains’ campus.
This is the one final meets for the Hawks before the postseason.
After this, The Shore also has the Penn Relay Carnival and the
Delaware Open prior to the MEAC Championship in early May. |

HAWKS HIGHLIGHTS
Chowan picked up their third straight win to improve to 7-8
on the season and 5-4 in Conference Carolinas action with a
win over Lees-McRae last weekend. The Hawks sit in fifth
place in the Conference Carolinas standings.
Heather Orell and Alexandria Hammonds lead the Hawks with 34
goals this season. Orell leads the team in points (49) while
Hammonds is second on the team with 40. Orell also leads the
team in assists with 15. Tashana Barnett is third on the
team with 28 goals this season.
Mallory Dunker is 5-1 on the season in her six starts this
year. Dunker is allowing a shade over 10 goals allowed per
contest and 7.99 goals allowed in Conference Carolinas
action.
LIONS NOTES
Emmanuel is 7-8 on the season and 4-4 in Conference
Carolinas play this season. The Lions are coming off a win
against Lees-McRae during the week.
Tara Larson and Megan Shortt lead the offense for the Lions
scoring 62 and 53 goals respectively. The Lions average
13.69 goals per contest and allow 13.90 goals per contest. |
