the Conference Carolinas Tennis Championships on Friday,
April 20 against Converse in the Quarterfinals.

The Hawks will kick off the 2018 Conference Carolinas
Women's Tennis Championships on Friday, April 20 in the
quarterfinals against the No. 8 seed Converse.
The semifinals and championship match of the Conference
Carolinas will be Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22
respectively.
HAWKS HIGHLIGHTS
Chowan capped off their 2018 regular season with a 17-3
overall record and an unbeaten record in league play at 11-0
to claim the first-ever Conference Carolinas Regular season
title. The Hawks are on a 13 match win streak.
Five-time Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, Polina
Novachuk, leads the team with a 19-4 overall record. Polina
and Cynthia Carrier posted a 17-3 mark in doubles
competition and went 10-1 in league action.
The duo of Hannah Tarlouskaya and Victoria Smolchenkova
finished off a unbeaten season in league play with an 11-0
record and 18-5 record overall.

Championships with an 8-12 overall record and 3-8 in league

Isaiah Shaw Leads the First Round of the CIAA Golf Championships

New Kent, VA – Fayetteville State University’s top golfer Isaiah
Shaw leads the field of 40 golfers in the 2018 Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Golf Championships. Shaw is
atop of the leaderboard with a two-over par (74) round at The Club
Viniterra located in New Kent, Virginia. The Broncos are currently
ranked fourth with a 334 (+46) round.
Isaiah Shaw (Junior - Altamonte Springs, Fla.) opened the day with
an Even par (36) performance on the 3,339-yard back nine. After
three holes played, Isaiah picked up two boogies (+2) with an extra
stroke on the par-four 11th hole (400 yards) and the 175-yard
par-three 12th hole. His score began to fall after he dropped a
birdie on the 373-yard par-four 14th hole. Before the turn on the
18th hole, another birdie fell into the cup to better the 526-yard
par-five hole by one stroke.
Shaw scored two more birdies on the 3,361-yard front nine, but four
boogies had him sitting two-over par after 18 holes.
Livingstone is the team-leader (317, +28) with co-host Virginia
Union trailing in second (321, +33) and Elizabeth City State holding
third (331, +43). Saint Augustine’s is two strokes (336, +48) behind
the Broncos. Johnson C. Smith is sixth (340, +52) and Chowan is
seventh (341, +53). Virginia State is trailing in the rear (375,
+87).
Adam Capps (Senior – Salemburg, N.C.) is ranked 16th for the Broncos
with 84 (+12) strokes. Joshua Smith (Junior – Fayetteville, N.C.)
has an 86 (+14) score which has him tied for 19th. Corey Bissen
(Sophomore – Hope Mills, N.C.) is 30th with a 90 (+18) scorecard and
James Rikard (Freshman - Arlington, Texas) is 36th with his 109
(+37).
Isaiah Shaw entered the two-day championship ranked second overall
with a season average of 75.25. He finished tied for fifth at the
CIAA Southern Division Tourney with a 149 All-Tournament
performance. Shaw was one stroke behind the Low Medalist at the
Northern Division Tourney for another All-Tournament performance.
The top five finishers in championship play are named to the
All-Tournament Team. The top ten golfers with the highest average
between all three tourneys are garnered All-Conference.
Prior to the start of the championship rounds, Saint Augustine’s Sam
Cudjoe had the best average of 73.25. Elizabeth City State’s Tyler
Futrell is also ranked second with a 75.25.

CU Men's Golf Opens Play

NEW KENT, Va.- The Chowan Men's Golf team sits in seventh
place completing the opening round of the 2018 CIAA Men's
Golf Championship on Thursday afternoon.

IN THE SCORECARDS •Livingstone leads the field with a 317 round
one score while the Virginia Union Panthers sit in second
•after posting a 321 on the day. Currently in third place sits
Elizabeth City who carded a 331 team score.
Leading the Hawks to sit T8 is Christian Fleetwood who carded a
79 on the day. Fleetwood shot three birdies and eight pars for
Chowan.
•With two birdies and eight pars, Donald Thaxton posted a 83 in
round one to sit T14.
•Currently T26 is Daniel Ivanouski who recorded a 87 for the Blue
and White.
•Steven Rhinard and Dale Davis shot a 92 and 93 respectively.

NCCU Hosts Spring Football Game on
Saturday

DURHAM, N.C. –The North Carolina Central University football
program, under the direction of first-year head coach
Granville Eastman, will host its annual “Maroon vs. Gray”
spring game on Saturday, April 21 at 4 p.m. inside
O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium on the NCCU campus. Admission and
parking is free.
Pre-game activities, featuring food trucks, tailgating, high
school battle of the bands and much more, begin at 2 p.m.
NCCU's spring game will feature the offensive and defensive
units going head-to-head from various starting positions on
the field. Standard scoring will apply for the offense, plus
one point for consecutive first downs, an explosive run of
12 yards or more, or an explosive pass of 15 yards or more.
The defense will tally four points for a turnover, six
points for a touchdown, three points for a sack, and one
point for a three-and-out, a tackle for loss, a blocked
kick, or when the offense starts at the defensive 25-yard
line or deeper and does not score a touchdown. Defense is
allowed a maximum of six points on any one play.
NCCU kicks off the 2018 season on Sunday, Sept. 2 against
Prairie View A&M University in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at
Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta.

Chowan finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed with a
12-7 overall record and posted an 8-2 mark in Conference
Carolinas in their first season of competition. The Hawks
are on a five match win streak.
Ghassan Alansi, ranked No. 70 in the country, leads the team
with a 15-4 record in singles action including an 8-2 record
against Conference Carolinas opponents. Adi Kaliakperov has
posted a 14-4 mark this season in singles action.
THEIR OPPONENT
King comes into the Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis
Championships with a 6-12 overall record and 5-5 mark in the
league.
Chowan and King battled to a 5-4 decision in favor of the
Hawks on April 8 in Bristol, Tenn. Chowan would take two of
the three doubles to start the match. Ghassan Alansi, Louis
Proulx, and Rafael Goncalves picked up singles victories to
secure the win.
