New Kent, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will host its 2018 Golf Championships in New Kent, VA on Thursday, April 19 – Friday, April 20. Eight (8) CIAA men’s golf teams will complete for the 2018 Championship Title at The Club at Viniterra. The event is free and open to the public.

The CIAA Golf Championship opening ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Thursday while teams will tee off for Round One at 9:00 a.m. Friday will feature Round Two beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the championship awards ceremony to be held at the conclusion of competition.

The Blue Bears of Livingstone College are the CIAA's top team of the regular season, having won both the Northern and Southern Division Tournaments. Last year, the Blue Bears finished in 3rd behind the Runner-Up Panthers of Virginia Union and Champion Hawks of Chowan University. The Livingstone men's golf team won their last conference championship title in 2015. The Blue Bears will need to fend off the Hawks who will be seeking to secure their 3rd consecutive CIAA Men's Golf Championship.

Athletes to watch at the upcoming CIAA Golf Championship include Sam Cudjoe of Saint Augustine's University who earned low medalist at the Southern Division Tournament with a 138 stroke total (-4 Par) and tied for second place in the Northern Division Tournament (151, +7 Par). Cudjoe currently leads all CIAA men's golfers averaging 73.25 strokes per round. Elizabeth City State's Tyler Futrell led the Northern Division Tournament, scoring only 7 over par for a total of 151 strokes
 
Tennis Downs Fayetteville State in Season Finale

Virginia Union University's women's tennis team defeated Fayetteville State University in the finale of the 2018 regular season 7-2 on Saturday,April 14, in Fayetteville, N.C.

VUU's Sabrina Connor and Kyra Smylie won at #1 and #2 singles, respectively, by identical 8-1 scores.

Virginia Union's Michaela Mondesir won at #4 singles 9-7 while Zsakee Crocker won at #6 singles 8-6.

The Lady Panthers also swept all three doubles matches, including a hard-fought 9-8 win by the #2 doubles team of Amirah Eckles and Zsakee Crocker.

VUU now prepares for the 2018 CIAA Championship, to be held April 19-21 in Bowie, Md. The Lady Panthers will enter the Championship as the #2 team in the Northern Division of the CIAA.
 
 
Smith Shines at Doc Jopson Invitational

The Virginia Union University women's track and field team competed Friday, April 13, at Bridgewater College's Doc Jopson Invitational. Teams competing Bridgewater, Virginia Wesleyan, Mary Washington Southern Virginia, Eastern Mennonite.

The Lady Panthers blasted through 10 Top-10 finishes and multiple Personal Records's to have an outstanding day.

Continuing her CIAA #5 ranking was freshman Hananiah Smith, who placed fifth overall in the triple jump. Smith additionally placed fifth in the long jump as well with a mark of 4.67 meters.

Taking second place in a great 3,000 meter race was freshman Jepngetich Sheila, who ran 12:37.32, just missing her lifetime best.

Also taking second was senior Timicia Brunson in the 100 meter dash when she ran a lifetime best of 12.59 to now rank #8 in the CIAA.

Placing fourth was senior Imani Jackson, and eighth was freshman Techera Carey, marking her first time in collegiate finals. In the 200 meter dash Jackson placed 3rd in a time of 26.25, and Brunson placed 4th with a time of 26.40.

Also making a Top-10 finish was Nigeria Jenkins in the long jump at 4.45 meters, and Carey placing eighth at 4.39 meters.

The Lady Panthers return to action on April 21 at the VSU Invitational, to be held at Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.
Wright Drives in Two Against Chowan

Virginia Union University's Daionna Wright drove in two runs, but Chowan University swept the Lady Panthers in a softball double-header 12-3 and 8-1 on Sunday, April 15, in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Wright drove in Kimberly Davis and Ro'Shaila Williams in the fifth inning of the first game.

VUU's Shontel Williams struck out seven batters in three innings of work.

In the second game, Linnette came on in relief of Bréana Miller and again struck out seven batters in 4.1 innings of work.

VUU's Annie Brenner drove in the Lady Panthers lone run in the second game.

The losses dropped Virginia Union's record to 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the CIAA. Chowan is now 23-12 overall and 12-0 in CIAA play.

The Lady Panthers wrap up the 2018 regular-season when they travel to Petersburg, Va., to face Virginia State University in a double-header on Saturday, April 21, at 12:00 p.m.
 
Hawks Tennis Tabs Ten on Academic All-Conference

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Conference Carolinas is proud to announce the 2018 Men's and Women's Tennis Academic All-Conference Teams. Chowan posted ten tennis student-athletes on the list.

Cynthia Carrier, Angelique Gouin, Anna Makhneva, Polina Novachuk, Victoria Smolchenkova, Lenka Styblova, Rafael Goncalves, Mateusz Izycki, Louis Proulx, and Mariano Yeh were named Academic All-Conference for Chowan Tennis.

To make Academic All-Conference you must be a junior or senior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The GPA is calculated based on the student-athlete's cumulative average through the previous semester, and each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year.

Each year the Academic All-Conference Teams are released as part of the championship season. Tennis will begin championship play on Friday, April 20. Erskine College will host the tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center from April 20-22, in Sumter, S.C.

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon.

Donya Salman led the Hawks with three hits and two walks at the plate. Beth Walker tallied two hits and three walks. Walker recorded a solo home run.

Kris Neal extended her program leading home run record with a solo shot in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 1, UNC Pembroke 5

Donya Salman picked up the first hit of the contest with a single up the middle. Kelsey Sonntag drew a walk before loading the bases with a Mackenzie Taggart single. The Hawks would strand the bases loaded.

Haley Cooper opened the third inning with a single up the middle. Beth Walker drew a walk before moving up 60 feet on a Brittany Parson sacrifice bunt. Cooper would come across to score on a wild pitch to lead 1-0.

UNC Pembroke took the lead, 2-1, in the fourth inning as a triple in the inning plated a run.

The Braves added three runs in the sixth inning with two home runs to take the contest 5-1.

Game Two: Chowan 2, UNC Pembroke 6

Beth Walker gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run.

Two errors in the top of the second inning allowed the Braves to regain the lead 2-1. In the bottom of the inning, Donya Salman and EmaRae Flores drew walks but would be stranded in scoring position.

Kris Neal knotted the contest at 2-all with a solo home run to lead off the third inning.

UNCP scored three runs in the top of the fifth on two hits to lead 5-2. The Braves tacked on a run in the seventh to take the victory 6-2.

Chowan continues their quest for the CIAA Northern Division title with a doubleheader against Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday, April 21. First pitch is at 12pm.
Offense Prevails at Spring Football Game 35-34

Virginia Union University's Tabyus Taylor raced 32 yards for a touchdown in the final minute, then Jeffrey Souza tacked on the extra point to give the offense a 35-34 win over the defense in the annual VUU Spring Football Scrimmage on Saturday, April 14, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.

VUU's head coach, Dr. Alvin Parker, played three quarterbacks in the game, Darius Taylor, Eric Caldwell and Bryson Stukes, with Taylor and Caldwell getting the lion's share of the snaps.

Taylor rushed for over 100 yards in the game with Coby Williams also seeing a lot of carries in the scrimmage.

The defense led for most of the game, leading by 10 points in the third quarter before the offense took charge of the game.

The Panthers open the 2018 regular season when they face Seton Hill University at 1:00 p.m. in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.

Lady Panthers Sweep ECSU on Senior Day

Virginia Union University's women's softball team exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game, then Bréana Miller struck out 10 while allowing on one hit in the second game as VUU swept Elizabeth City State University 11-2 and 10-1 on Senior Day on Saturday, April 14, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.

VUU saluted the seniors, Miller, Shontel Linnette, Ro'Shaila Williams and Karrina Gooding between the two games.

In the first game, Linnette allowed just two hits while striking out seven over five innings of work.

The offensive fireworks were provided by freshman Audrenik Howard, who blasted her second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the second game, Miller also drove in two runs with a double and a single. On the mound, Miller set down the first nine ECSU batters she faced.

The wins raised VUU's record to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City State fell to 1-25 overall and 1-11 in CIAA play.

The wins also put Virginia Union in sole possession of second place in the Northern Division of the CIAA. The Lady Panthers will travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to face the division-leading Hawks of Chowan University in a double-header beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 15.
